ABOUT RIKI FERNAND

Paper is an enchanting raw material for me. I have been collecting magazines for over 25 years now. The colorful texts and prints are my major inspiration. These magazine pages are cut into small pieces and reassembled into abstract geometrical forms.

By cutting, reattaching, and gluing these paper pieces, I create colorful, harmonious shapes and combine them onto an acrylic-painted canvas I have previously prepared. This process is a creation of a new and wonderful dialogue between the paper and its content in words and color.

At the age of 46, after 21 years of a successful career as an architect and interior designer, I discovered a new, enchanting way to express my creativity and vision without the boundaries of form and texture.

Magazines are considered "old world" in our present digital world. These magazines contain a universe of wonderful information in texts and photos. Recycling this information intrigues me and encourages me to "invent" something new from old materials.

Each process is a large experiment, as I don't truly know in advance how the work will end up, and that's part of the intrigue! Old magazines are the past that speak to my imagination in an artistic way and influence my present creativity and art.
